内容記述 | As described in many of the recent books published on the subject of ‘rediscovering the beauty of the Japanese language’ the Kyoto dialect of Japanese (Kyo-kotoba) stands distinct as a refined, elegant and polite variant of the language. This view is reasonable, since historically the Kyoto dialect has influenced much of what equates in atandard contemporary Japanese as ‘polite language’. However, this may lead to the stereotyped view that the Kyoto dialect and its speakers are ‘more polite’ than other dialect speakers. This image, often propagated by advertising and the media, feeds off other non-linguistic representaions of the ancient capital as a home of the gentle, feminine and refined domain of the Japanese experience. This paper is an attempt to look behind some of the characterstics of Kyo-kotoba through established sociolinguistic and pragmatic theory, and account for its particularly defined characterization. | |||||
