However, an analysis of China’s four great folktales and many other popular stories that were widely disseminated and very popular during the early modern period reveals that, while resistance and opposition to a centralized society existed, the stories also express various types of new visions of communality. They are primarily based on fantasies about brotherhood, the opposite sex, goddesses, and mothers and sons.
