内容記述 | According to Yanagita Kunio, Tamayorihime is a generic term for miko (shrine maidens) who have the ability to possess spirits. As ‘miko’ is a generic term, a variety of images of Tamayorihime have been passed down via folklore. The present study organises the folklore traditions told at 322 Shinto shrines where Tamayorihime is enshrined, and it divides these traditions into the following two types: 1. those believed to have their origin in Kiki shinwa (the mythology described in Kojiki and Nihonshoki) and 2. those that have yet to be verified/those that are unrelated to Kiki shinwa. Both types contain the following five elements: creation, dragons, childbirth/child-rearing, the sea, and water. In addition, detailed investigation of the folklore traditions related to Tamayorihime has indicated that numerous traditions throughout the country are related to the sea and childbirth/child-rearing, and that at shrines that preserve traditions related to water, the tales tell of characteristics newly attributed to Tamayorihime (the development of rice paddies and the god of rice cultivation) that postdate those told in Kiki shinwa. On the basis of the above, the author concludes that Tamayorihime’s character changed from a gentle one, such as a wet nurse and a mother, to a more active one, where she traveled from place to place, bringing blessings to the land and conveying her authority to people, while retaining that character. |
